Gynaecology - Obstetrics Center - Your child’s follow-up

At birth

At birth, your child will be examined by the midwife and if necessary by the duty paediatrician.

It might be necessary for your baby tobe admitted in the neonatal unit ofour maternity hospital, but this will be explained to you by the duty paediatrician.
The neonatal unit is situated on the 2nd floor of our maternity hospital, next to the post-delivery unit.

Certain situations may need you or your child, to be transferred to another hospital.
Most of the time this transfer is done towards a Level 3 hospital in the Midi-Pyrénées area: The Paule de Viguier hospital in Purpan for your transfer and for your child, the Child hospital of Purpan.
Our maternity hospital is part of the perinatology network of the Midi-Pyrénées (Matermip).

In the unit

The midwives and assistant paediatric nurses will help you look after your baby if necessary.

You will have the regular visit of the paediatrician who will examine and check your child’sevolution.

Once the obstetrician and the paediatrician decided that you could be discharged, you can be discharged, with your agreement any day of the week, usually in the morning between 9am-12am.

An early discharge is possible under certain circumstances.

Few days after birth, theTest de Guthrie (heel prick test) will be offered by the paediatrician.
This test involves taking a small sample of your baby’s blood to screen it for rare conditions such asphenylketonuria (metabolic disorder), congenital hypothyroidism, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, depranocytosis and cystic fibrosis.

After discharge

You must make an appointment with your paediatrician 15 days after the birth of your child.
